J.K. Rowling Pens Shocking Statement About Johnny Depp
J.K. Rowling, the brain behind Harry Potter and bombastic critic of the political right, has come under recent fire for keeping Johnny Depp in her Harry Potter spinoff “Fantastic Beasts.”
Depp was accused of abusing his ex-wife Amber Heard but remains the antagonist in “Fantastic Beasts,” due out next year.
Director David Yates defended him virulently last month, saying, “He’s full of decency and kindness, and that’s all I see. Whatever accusation was out there doesn’t tally with the kind of human being I’ve been working with.”
And J.K. Rowling has blocked Twitter users that criticize her decision to keep Depp in the film.

Since Rowling is a staunch feminist and proud leftist, many assumed it would be a no-brainer for her to remove an alleged wife beater from her movie. She could probably cast literally anyone with a clean resume and the project would still gross millions at the theater.
But that hasn’t happened. In fact, Rowling has dug in and explicitly insisted on keeping the accused wife beater in her film.
She took to her personal website to address the mounting concerns today.
“Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies,” she said in part.
The post has only been up for hours but no doubt will cause waves in the entertainment industry. Fans are outraged that Rowling and Yates have resolved to keep Depp onboard.
jk rowling has worked so systematically and methodically to destroy my love of her creation. it’s fascinating.

JK Rowling, ‘feminist’, influencer of children and pop culture, basically just said it’s ok to hire an accused wife beater cause he’s a talented artist.

Hey @jk_rowling I’m curious, do you still feel “happy” with Johnny Depp even when looking at these photos or any other evidence that Amber Heard provided? I guess the pay-check overrides any shred of conscience you had left. pic.twitter.com/aB2ohqGO9M

Rowling’s indifference reflects a sad moral truth about much of the entertainment industry. If this year in Hollywood has taught us anything, money and notoriety almost always override morality. There are several exceptions to this rule — Ridley Scott just replaced Kevin Spacey in his upcoming film after harassment allegations mounted against the actor.
Given J.K. Rowling’s colossal success and impact, she could likely replace Johnny Depp without much fallout. Her insistence on keeping the disgraced actor is confusing and seemingly hypocritical, though not entirely unexpected. Since the millionaire writer has difficulty taking criticism on social media, she likely doesn’t have enough of a backbone to fire Depp, either.
No doubt this situation will continue to unfold before “Fantastic Beasts” gets released in November 2018.
