Production has begun on “Convicting a Murderer,” which is a followup series to Netflix’s smash hit “Making a Murderer.”

Production has begun on Convicting a Murderer, described as a follow-up to Netflix’s Emmy-nominated docuseries Making a Murderer, from documentary filmmaker Shawn Rech (A Murder In The Park).

Producers say Convicting A Murderer will investigate the controversial case built by the State of Wisconsin against Steven Avery for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach, in which police were accused of tampering with crime scenes and planting evidence to manipulate the investigation and implicate Avery of the murder. Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey are currently serving life sentences.
Rech will work with District Attorney Ken Kratz, Lead Investigator Tom Fassbender, and other major players in State v. Avery on the docuseries.
This should be incredible. The major criticism against the original series is that it was extremely biased against law enforcement, and was pretty much openly advocating on behalf of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey. I don’t entirely agree with all the criticism, although I certainly understand why it exists. There’s no doubt that the series is biased. Whether or not it set out to destroy the reputation of the law enforcement agents involved is a different story.
Here’s what I do know for sure. I grew up in Wisconsin, and vividly remember this whole debacle of a situation. It was on the news every single night. The murder of Teresa Halbach captivated the people of Wisconsin years before the whole country got into the Netflix series.
District Attorney Ken Kratz is also one of the scummiest people I’ve ever seen in a criminal case, and I thought the same thing when the case was going on. Something just felt off about him. It got even worse when he was accused of some pretty bad sexual misconduct.
Here’s what I also know for a fact: Most people back home in Wisconsin are pretty convinced that Steven Avery killed Teresa Halbach. The Netflix saga didn’t do much to change the mind of the local people. They’re much more split on Brendan Dassey. I’m sure plenty of people will be tuning in to catch the followup series, which doesn’t have a release date yet.
