Johnny Manziel’s College Coach Reveals Absurd Story About The QB’s Time At A&M

The story of Johnny Manziel’s infamous Scooby-Doo photo was recently revealed by his former offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

Manziel made massive waves on the internet after a photo of him dancing with a scantily-clad woman while dressed in a Scooby-Doo outfit went viral during his time at Texas A&M. (RELATED: FOOTBALL FANS NEED TO RELAX ABOUT JOHNNY MANZIEL’S PLAYING TIME IN CANADA)

Kingsbury, who is now the head coach at Texas Tech, said the following on Manziel’s podcast “#ComebackSZN,” transcription via 247Sports:

“The Scooby-Doo picture. There’s a great story behind that one too because the next day we’re going to Mississippi State and Johnny is nowhere to be found in the offensive meeting. The picture has already come out. As a staff, I’m like, ‘That chick is hot. Good job, Johnny.’ I’m thinking he’s going to be on time,” Kingsbury said. “He doesn’t show at all for the meeting, so we’re trying to cover for his ass so he can at least show up for the walkthrough. Friday before we leave to go to Starkville, here he comes. Johnny has some crazy excuse. His roommate pulled the plug on his alarm clocks. Something with the electricity, but we already know what he’s been doing. So he misses the offensive meeting and trots out to walkthrough. Coach Sumlin doesn’t know, at this point, that he’s late. He goes through the walkthrough, probably still a little intoxicated at that point. We do our deal, he gets on the plane, goes to Starkville, and plays probably the best game I’ve ever seen. At that point, I’m like, ‘This kid is not human.’”

I remember where I was when I first saw this photo. I was sitting at a dive bar in Madison when my buddy tossed me his phone with the legendary picture pulled up. That’s the moment I knew Manziel was going to be a star in college. Any guy with the ability to sling touchdown passes and rock a Scooby-Doo outfit has all the confidence you could ever want in a quarterback.

How many players could pull off showing up late to practice while intoxicated and then dominate a Power Five college football team the next day? Not many. That’s Brett Favre-level insanity. You always think the saga of Johnny Manziel can’t get any crazier, and then it always day. It’s nonstop entertainment and content for football fans everywhere.
