Disney Is Dumping A Sickening Amount Of Money Into A New ‘Star Wars’ Series

Disney is going to write some fat checks to produce a “Star Wars” series for its new streaming service Disneyflix.

The New York Times recently reported:

A live-action “Star Wars” series coming to the platform from Jon Favreau, the director of films like “Iron Man” and “The Jungle Book,” is expected to cost roughly $100 million for 10 episodes. “‘Star Wars’ is a big world, and Disney’s new streaming service affords a wonderful opportunity to tell stories that stretch out over multiple chapters,” Mr. Favreau said in an email. He added of Mr. Strauss: “Marketing is about telling a story, and his background in that area allows us to collaborate and create new content.”

That is a ton of money. In fact, that would make this new “Star Wars” series one of the most expensive series ever produced in the history of streaming.

To put things into perspective, the final “Game of Thrones” season reportedly is being done for under $100 million, and that already has a baked-in, committed audience. I can’t stress enough how much coin $100 million is for a studio. (RELATED: ‘STAR WARS: EPISODE IX’ DIRECTOR REVEALS FILMING HAS BEGUN WITH SOMBER MESSAGE)

The executives at Disney better pray like hell this works out because spending this kind of money is something that can quickly get a person fired when things head south.

There also aren’t a ton of details known about the series, other than it will take place seven years after “Return of the Jedi.” I think that’s an idea we can all get behind, especially if we get to see what happened with Luke prior to “The Force Awakens.”

The only obvious downside is that we don’t get anymore Darth Vader content. Vader will always be one of the most badass villains in entertainment history.

There is no set release date yet for the unnamed “Star Wars” series. Make sure to check back to The Smoke Room for more updates.
