Honestly, is anybody surprised by this? All the signs are pointing to Tua being the starter, and how could any of us forget Hurts’ comments a few days ago. He’s clearly very frustrated with the whole situation. That’s not the kind of attitude you’d expect to see in a guy if he thought he was keeping his starting job. I think Tua is the obvious choice here, and at this point, I don’t even really think it’s a close call. He’s way more elusive, he’s more accurate down the field, he can make all the throws and he can run the option without an issue.
Hurts has no issue running the ball, but his lack of firepower with his arm allows defenses to stack the box. That’s going to be a problem against elite defenses, which is what happened in the first half of the title game against Georgia. Saban needs to ride Tua the whole way. It’s the only choice that’s on the table for the Tide.
