Kate Upton’s Husband Says He Contemplated Suicide. Here’s What Saved Him
Kate Upton’s husband Justin Verlander might seem like he’s on top of the world nowadays.
He’s a World Series champion, married to one of the most famous supermodels in the world, and is the fourth-highest paid pitcher in the MLB. But there was a point in time where he felt like he had nothing to live for. (RELATED: This Is How Avicii Reportedly Killed Himself)
In a new interview with the Bleacher Report, Verlander explained how he went through a dark time after sustaining a season-ending injury in 2014 — and the only thing that pulled him through was his then-girlfriend Kate Upton.
“She was instrumental in me not … like, jumping off a bridge. I was depressed and kind of just upset at the world and trying to hide my own sh*t,” he explains of Upton.
“F**k, man. She was what I needed,” adding, “I don’t like to talk to people about being hurt. As athletes, you’re not supposed to. It’s an excuse … But she was someone I could talk to. I mean, basically a therapist,” he says. Somebody I could trust with … worries about my career. Worries about, Can I make it? Worries about what I’m going through to get back. And just the overall sh*ttiness of it all.”
Upton received her fair share of setbacks and career anxieties too. After her first cover of the 2012 Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition came out, swift backlash ensued. Many people thought she was too fat to be a cover model.
“I mean, being a woman? Being in that industry? Being that famous? That was a level I hadn’t dealt with,” Verlander continued.
A lot has happened since Verlander’s ill-fated 2014 season. He’s won a World Series with the Houston Astros and he married Kate Upton last year. And just last month, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together. (RELATED: Kate Upton Makes Bombshell Announcement. It’s Major Life-Changing News)
