It sounds like actor Idris Elba is a heavy favorite to take over as James Bond once Daniel Craig decides to give up the role.

Barbara Broccoli and Antoine Fuqua recently discussed the future of the hit franchise, and it sounds like fans of Elba have a lot to be excited about. (RELATED: HERE ARE THE ODDS FOR WHO WILL BE THE NEXT JAMES BOND)

The Daily Star reported:

Director Antoine Fuqua chatted to Barbara about who will take over from Daniel Craig, 50, if he hangs up his gun after the next Bond film, due next year.

Idris, 45, is in the running to take on the coveted role.

Antoine, 52, revealed Barbara feels “it is time” for an ethnic minority actor to star as 007 and she is certain “it will happen eventually”.

He added: “Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

The Independent also stated that Elba is a “frontrunner.”

Let’s all be honest here. Elba would make a great James Bond. I don’t know what fantasy world you’re living in if you don’t think he’d making an outstanding 007. He’s one of the best actors in the game right now. Yes, I recognize the character has historically been white. So what? That really doesn’t matter much to me at all. Now, we’d be having a whole different conversation if they wanted Craig to be replaced by a woman, which is an idea Elba once even floated himself.

I also have no doubt that somebody will want to get up and complain about Bond being played by somebody that doesn’t fit the traditional white role. Guess what? Those people will still likely end up seeing the movie, and they’ll likely enjoy it.

The man who plays Bond doesn’t need to be defined by his skin color. He will always be defined by how well he can pull off the charming, womanizing, charismatic and deadly character. Plus, every actor brings their own little speciality to the role. Sean Connery was by far and away the greatest womanizer to ever play the role, and Craig is without question the dark Bond we’ve ever had.

I’ll be fascinated to see how it all plays out if Elba is the selection.
