Today, September 18, is United States Air Force’s birthday.

The U.S. Air Force was established 71 years ago, but was originally intended to be a part of the U.S. Army. And while it may be the youngest branch of the US military, it remains the largest and most technologically advanced Air Force in the world.

Founded in 1947, the U.S. Air Force came about as the world was recovering from the shock of WWII. Having lost nearly 68,000 U.S. pilots in the conflict, the U.S. held nothing back in bulking up its defense. So in the National Security Act of 1947, Harry S Truman established the Department Of The Air Force, based now out of the Pentagon in Arlington, VA.

The Air Force has come a long way since its establishment. It’s been involved in almost every major conflict, including the the Cold War, the Korean War, the Vietnam war, Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts, and several NATO bombings.

One thing’s for sure. We’re lucky to have the Air Force on our side. Check out some of their most awesome photos below.
