Major University Threatens To End Its Sports Program If Athletes Get Paid. That’s Pure Insanity

University of Wisconsin Chancellor Rebecca Blank recently threatened to end the school’s sports program if the NCAA allows athletes to get paid.

“It’s not clear that we would continue to run an athletic program. We’re not interested in professional sports. We’re interested in student-athletes,”  Blank said during cross-examination in a sports trial taking place in California.

That statement is obviously complete and utter insanity. That’s probably why the university released a new statement to Channel3000.com and stated, in part:

The University of Wisconsin has no plans to stop offering athletics. Chancellor Blank strongly supports Wisconsin’s athletic program and believes the Badgers are a major asset to our campus and the Big Ten.

The chancellor’s comments yesterday were offered in the context of describing the economics of running a major broad-based amateur athletics program.

If a change to the structure of college athletics were to occur, UW would expect to be part of any conversation within the Big Ten and nationally about what that would mean for university athletic programs.

Let me just go on the record right now and say that if the first statement offered by Blank is how she actually feels, then she needs to be removed from power immediately. There’s no place for anybody in control of the Wisconsin Badgers who would ever threaten to shut the whole show down if athletes get paid. That is absurd, disgraceful and an embarrassment to my university. (RELATED: THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL WORLD SHOULD FEAR WISCONSIN FOR ONE SIMPLE REASON)

I can’t even begin to explain how stupid it would be to eliminate an entire sports department because the NCAA might allow athletes to actually make a little money. First off, athletes should straight-up just be allowed to get paid as much as they can for their likeness. If somebody wants to pay them for endorsements, jerseys, autographs or anything else that your average student could do, then they should be able to do it. That’s called capitalism. Controlling everything is called communism. Do we really want communism in this country?

Let athletes make money off their likeness; don’t threaten to eliminate athletic departments and everything will be alright. I honestly can’t believe I even had to say all that. It should just be common sense.
