Ohio State Parts Ways With Defensive Coordinator Greg Schiano

Greg Schiano is no longer the defensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

ESPN reported the following Monday afternoon:

Ohio State is replacing defensive coordinator Greg Schiano with a pair of new defensive coaches, one of them a longtime assistant from rival Michigan.

Former Wolverines defensive line coach Greg Mattison and former San Francisco 49ers assistant Jeff Hafley will join the Buckeyes as co-defensive coordinators, the school announced Monday afternoon.

Schiano leaves the program after three seasons as defensive coordinator under Meyer. Schiano had been working under a one-year deal worth $1.5 million, with a source telling ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg that the contract expires on Jan. 31.

Getting rid of Schiano is probably a smart decision. The Buckeyes defense looked pathetic at times this year, and there’s no excuse for that with the talent OSU has on the roster.

Let’s not forget that the Buckeyes gave up 49 to Purdue, 39 to Michigan, 31 to Nebraska, 28 to TCU and 31 to Oregon State. (RELATED: Urban Meyer Ends His Career At Ohio State With A Rose Bowl Win Over Washington)

They shouldn’t have allowed any of those teams to ever even hit the 20 mark. Something had to change, and Schiano will have a ton of opportunities out there for him.

Two guys running a defense is also a unique idea. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that before at a major college program.

New head coach Ryan Day is certainly already making his mark on the program.

If OSU can get its defense figured out next year, they will absolutely dominate as long as the offense stays consistent.

Plus, they just added Justin Fields in the quarterback room. The future is looking real good in Columbus.
