UCF will have a new man under center in 2019 as they look for their third straight undefeated season.

Former Notre Dame quarterback Brandon Wimbush, a grad transfer, announced Tuesday on his instagram account that he will play his final season of college football in Orlando.

“The journey continues on… A sincere thank you to Notre Dame for giving me endless opportunities on and off the field. Words truly can not describe what this incredible University and the PEOPLE mean to me and always will mean to me,” Wimbush said. “With that being said, I am excited to announce that UCF has granted me an awesome opportunity to play my last year of collegiate football for their great University. Thank you to Coach Heupel, and Coach Lebby for this incredible opportunity. Looking forward to winning em all!”

Wimbush started the 2018 season as Notre Dames’ starter, but was benched three games in for sophomore Ian Book despite having a career record of 13-3 as a starter. The Fighting Irish went on to finish the regular season 12-0, before being routed by Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinal. (RELATED: Clemson Rocks Notre Dame To Advance To The Title Game. Wimbush will likely enter spring practice as the favorite to take over as the starter at UCF, but will have to contend with rising sophomore Darriel Mack, who started the Golden Knight’s final two games after a gruesome leg injury claimed the season of previous starter and Heisman candidate McKenzie Milton.

Milton is not expected to be available for the Golden Knights in 2019, so it should be Wimbush’s show next season. He’ll have the chance to significantly improve his passing game under the tutelage of UCF head coach Josh Heupel.
