Ryan Fitzpatrick once sent Alex Smith a text message that turned out to be incredibly wrong in hindsight.
The former Washington quarterback suffered one of the grossest leg injuries in the history of sports in 2018, and there was a real chance he could never play again. What did Fitzpatrick, who now plays for WTF, do after Smith’s injury? He texted him to let him know he would likely bounce back without two many issues. Fitzpatrick said the following during a recent interview with Chris Long, according to BroBible:
When Alex broke his leg in that game a few years ago, I had what I thought was a similar injury: I fractured my tibia in 2014 with the Houston Texans. So the single worst text I’ve ever sent out, I sent it to Alex. I said ‘Hey, Alex, just want to let you know they’ll fix you right up, you’ll be good as new. I’m out here and I don’t feel any pain from my injury three years later.’ And I sent it and felt good about it, and he said ‘Well, mine might be a little more complicated.’ And 17 surgeries later, and the story of what he had to overcome, I felt like the biggest a**hole.

Yeah, this one is going to go in the big yikes column! Obviously, Fitzpatrick wasn’t being malicious at all. He was just trying to pick up Smith’s spirits, but he also turned out to be 100% wrong.
Not only was Smith’s leg injury incredibly serious, but he had to undergo several major surgeries to get it taken care of.

I don’t want to flame Fitzpatrick too badly, but this might be an all-time bad text message. Predicting a guy will be just fine and he ends up nearly never taking another nap is about as wrong as you can be.
At least Fitzpatrick can laugh about it now!
