Joe Milton will start at quarterback for the Tennessee Volunteers.

The Volunteers released the team’s official depth chart ahead of the opener against Bowling Green, and the former Michigan starter was listed as QB1. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football)

This is 100% the right call by the Volunteers and head coach Josh Heupel. Despite the fact that Milton was eventually pulled from the starting spot in Ann Arbor, he has all the physical tools necessary to be a solid college quarterback.

He has an absolutely massive arm and he can run with the best of them. He looks like a linebacker out on the field, but he’s a QB.

The other thing Tennessee has to be aware of is the fact that fans are sick and tired of losing in Knoxville. They want to win and they want to win ASAP.

While they’re not going to be great right away, playing Milton is a bold decision I think fans will respect.

At the very least, you have to tip your cap to Heupel for rolling the dice. He’s playing a guy with a streaky history but tons of upside.

Will it pay off? We’ll find out starting week one, but I think Tennessee made the right call with this one.
